Justin Earle comes from good stock. His father (legendary and ground-breaking singer/songwriter Steve Earle) must have taught him well. But don’t be so quick to compare him to his father. Whatever he may have learned from his old man, he continues to prove himself as an individual- always forging his own path no matter where the others are going. As pop music perpetually becomes more and more stale and irrelevant, Justin Earle will continue to forge a path of musical righteousness and great rock and roll. Widely regarded as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been labeled contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Professor Sarah Lamb,Brandeis University, examines the ways middle-class older Indians and their communities are reconfiguring aging as they confront - at once embracing and challenging - processes they associate with 'modern', 'Western' and 'global' living. Most dramatic among India's new institutions of aging are the old age homes proliferating for the middle and upper middle classes. Another development is the salience of transnational living among the middle classes, along with the growing prevalence of living alone. Such emerging modes of aging are taken by many Indians, at home and abroad, to represent a profound transformation - a transformation involving not only aging per se, but principles underlying the foundation of society and the very identity of India as a nation and culture. Presented by Institute for International, Comparative and Area Studies at UC San Diego.

Jews, like other immigrants to the United States, went through a process of creating their new ethnic communities through the medium of food, balancing pre-migration ideas about taste with the reality that in America food existed in abundance and at prices unimaginable 'back home'. This talk will explore the ways in which the Jewish encounter with food before migration, and in particular its relationship to issues of class, gender, and communal authority, intersected with American realities. Also, how typical or atypical was this Jewish pattern, in relationship to the experiences of other groups who migrated at the same time. -- Comment by Professor David Gutierrez, UCSD Department of History -- Lunch provided ONLY FOR THOSE WHO RSVP to judaicstudies@ucsd.edu.

Professor Laila Parsons, McGill University -- In recent years, the historiography of the early 20th-century Arab Middle East has benefited from critiques of the British and French imperial projects in the region, and we now know much more than we did before about colonial discourses, colonial bureaucrats and colonial power. Using the life story of the Arab-nationalist soldier Fawzi al-Qawuqji as an example, this talk will argue that the historiography of the early 20th-century Arab Middle East can be further enriched by narrative histories and biographies in which the people of the region itself (rather than colonial bureaucrats) serve as the protagonists. Presented by Institute for International, Comparative and Area Studies at UC San Diego.
